About the race
The WJM Linlithgow 10K is a prestigious and long-running community road running event around the picturesque and historic town, organised by Linlithgow Athletic Club. Established in 1992, the race includes a junior fun run and is held under licence from Scottish Athletics.
The event raises a modest amount of money that is used to help fund the work the club does in promoting and providing opportunities for athletics in our community. No individuals within our organisation gain financially from the event in any way.
We have some newly commissioned films that delve into the history and organisation of 10k that you can watch at the following links.
Thanks to Lewis Saunders of i-VFFX Film & Video Production.
We will be doing everything we can to deliver a safe and enjoyable event for all and will follow any covid restrictions that are in place at the time.
TRAINING PLANS
Club member and endurance coach John Redding has created two 10 week 10k running plans.
Our SPONSORS
Linlithgow Athletic Club is extremely grateful for the support of the following organisations:-
Important Race Information
Please follow us on Facebook or Instagram for the latest race updates.
In the unlikely event that we have to cancel the event (such as Covid restrictions), all runners will receive a refund minus an administration fee or have the option of rolling the entry fee onto the next scheduled Linlithgow 10k race. Entrants are not entitled to a refund if they choose to withdraw and may not defer their place to a subsequent event.
This year we will be offering pacers during the race, ranging from 40 to 65 mins.
Runners who anticipate finishing after 1 hour and 15 minutes should be aware that there will be a 'sweeper' cyclist travelling at around this pace to indicate the opening of the road to traffic. After the cyclist passes, runners can of course continue to complete the course exercising caution and proceeding as a prudent and careful pedestrian.
For logistical reasons, there will be a strict time limit for the 10k of 1 hour and 40 minutes. The course and finish area will be dismantled in accordance with this so please do not enter if you cannot achieve this finish time.
Our current plan is to provide technical T-shirts, unless as an alternative you wish to donate the cost of the T-shirt to our nominated charity, Macmillan Cancer Support.
THE ROUTE
The route is undulating and can be quite challenging so advisable to familiarise yourself with the route, if possible. The section behind the loch narrows, making overtaking difficult during this part of the race. Please obey the signals and directions given by route stewards – for safety reasons please do not wear headphones.
Please note, the route narrows between 4.4k and 6.3k (the path behind Linlithgow Loch) and runners are asked to avoid attempting to overtake between these points. Please respect other path users.
While some roads are closed for us, others are not. Please take care and listen to any instructions from our marshals. You may be requested to stop due to traffic priority (e.g., at the entrance road to Sainsbury’s). Please respect the marshals’ instructions.
Race logistics and facilities
RACE START POINT
The race starts in Linlithgow High Street and finishes in the historic Linlithgow Palace Peel area.
RACE NUMBER & TIMING CHIP
The arrangements for competitors obtaining numbers with timing chips (attached to bib) have still to be confirmed. Competitors will be informed nearer the event date.
NUMBer transfer
Entries are transferable to someone known to the original entrant up until one week before the closing date. Please note that original entrants and 'transferees' should hold an EntryCentral account to ensure that all competitor data is accurate. Should the event fill it will be possible for an entrant to transfer to someone on the waiting list.
Toilets
Facilities will be available at the Burgh Halls (near the start line), and at the Low Port Centre (opposite Tesco).
Limited toilet facilities have also been made available in the following public houses on the High Street near the start line; The Four Mary’s and the Old Post Office
Please note – masks must be worn prior to gaining access to all these buildings.
Bag storage
Bags can be stored at the finish area on the Peel. (Please note, bags are left at the owner’s risk as the area is unsecured).
TRAVEL and PARKING
Linlithgow is a well-connected town with access to both M9 and M8 motorways. Linlithgow railway station is a short walk from the start and finish. There are several car parks in the town.
(1) New station overflow car park off the Edinburgh Road to the east of the town (adjacent to West Lothian Cricket Club). (2) Long stay car park adjacent to Tesco. (3) Loch-side car parks, accessed from Water Yett and St. Ninians Way. (4) The Vennel car park at the Cross (charges). Please park considerately. Please do not park illegally.
ASSEMBLY AND MUSTER
All competitors should be assembled at The Cross, by 2:10 pm. There will be signs on the day to direct the runners towards this. Following the pre-race briefing, runners will be led to the start area. Please follow the start instructions given by officials. There are no changing and showering facilities available, so make sure that you know where or with whom you leave your belongings. The race will start at 2:30 pm by the sound of a klaxon.
Zone Start and Race Pacers
After the success of the pacers last year, we will be offering this option again, with a range of times from 40 minutes to 1 hour 5 minutes. The pacers running at the following pace times: 40 mins (blue bib), 45 mins (yellow bib), 50 mins (red bib), 55 mins (green bib), 60 mins (purple) and 1 hr 5 mins (orange bib).
Although there will be a mass start, the starting area will be set out in zones, clearly marked by our volunteer marshals. Your start zone allocation will depend on your estimated running time as stated on your entry form. Runners can determine what start zone they have been allocated by looking at their race number, which is sent out in the race pack. The colour wash of the race number will determine which start zone runners are in. The actual zones will be clearly identified by colour matched cones on race day. Look out for race pacers and start zone signs. Please do not enter your start zone until Linlithgow High Street has been closed to traffic and only when clearly instructed to do so by the Race Announcer.
DISTANCE MARKERS
All distance markers for the race will be shown in kilometres. 10 kilometres is approximately 6.2 miles.
The Finish Area
The finish line is the Peel, the large grassy area just to the east of the Palace.
All finishers will receive finishers’ items as soon as they cross the finish line. T-shirts are sorted by size (you will be directed by a marshal), so please take the t-shirt size you requested on your entry form.
Due to Covid, it is important that runners disperse quickly from the finish and we ask you to comply with this. Please maintain social distancing and avoid queueing. This year there will be no presentations.
It is recommended that runners disperse via the path to the north of the Peel and round the Palace. Marshals will be on hand to help and guide.
Marshals
Please remember our volunteer marshals are giving up their time to help everything run smoothly. Please treat them respectfully!
Results
Timing and results are provided by Perfect Timing. While results will not be available immediately after the race, they will be available at the Perfect Timing website after the race – search by name, club or race number for your result.
